European Commission Urged to Address US Tariffs on Medical Technology
MedTech Europe, along with other European medical technology associations, has sent an open letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, urgently requesting a meeting to discuss the threat of trade tariffs on medical technologies. The letter outlines the potential negative impacts of these tariffs, such as supply chain disruptions, increased production costs, and restricted access to essential medical devices and services in Europe.
The medical technology industry is already facing challenges of device shortages, regulatory burdens, and the risk of losing innovation to global markets, with Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) being particularly at risk. The tariffs could adversely affect patient care by delaying or limiting access to life-saving medical technologies. The letter supports the European Commission’s “Zero-for-Zero” tariff proposal for industrial goods trade between Europe and the U.S. and urges its extension to medical technologies.
The signatories stress the importance of swift action to protect the medical technology sector, which is vital to Europe’s healthcare systems, warning that inaction could undermine patient care, increase healthcare costs, and threaten the sustainability of Europe’s healthcare infrastructure.
